Quick Overview of Ukulele Strings and Tuning Pegs

Types of strings:

Gut Strings

These strings are made in Italy by Aquila since the 17th century. These strings were the best available for many centuries but have now been surpassed. Nevertheless, the sound is still lovely from genuine gut strings.

Nylon Strings
These strings are cheap to produce and generally reliable. They produce a fairly nice sound. They have a tendency to stretch for quite a while, so you will spend time re-tuning your ukulele in the beginning.

Nylgut Strings
These are the rolls royce of strings. Made and patented by an Italian company called Aquila, they are produced in a small town near venice. They have a fuller sound than gut and nylon which most ukulele players prefer. Almost all of our ukuleles come with Aquila nylgut strings.

How Often Should I Change Strings:

There is no hard and fast rule on this. It depends on personal preference and how long you play.

Some artists like to switch there strings after 2-3 months, whilst other players have kept the same strings for 2 years.

We suggest you change them up every 6-9 months. Once again, this isn't a hard and fast rule, we argued about this at length amongst ourselves! There was disagreements, but luckily nobody got hurt!

Tuning Pegs:

All of our ukuleles come with geared tuners which is important. Even though the traditional ukes have come with friction tuners in the past, they have a tendency to slip.

You wont need to make any decisions on this, we have made them for you. The old school tuning pegs had many issues, they were the weakest part of the ukulele and used to break all the time. Nowadays they are engineered better and its just a matter of aesthetics. All of our tuners are either "open geared tuners" or "closed geared tuners". Pretty simple, open means you can see the gears. Closed means you cant see them. Both work in the same fashion, the only difference is the way they look.
